Yes - Please Activate!

Hi there,

I hope I haven't confused you all too much. Bear with me while I try to get this blog moved over and (hopefully) make my life a bit simpler and easier. Some of you know that I'm expecting my second child this July and I'm trying to consolidate some things before that happens.

If you deleted the activation e-mail, simply go to the new blog at www.decadiaries.wordpress.com and click on the words that say 'Subscribe to deca diaries by E-mail' - it's on the right hand side. Then just enter your e-mail address - the same way you did when you subscribed to this one. Thank you for your patience and for your attention to information about our neighbourhood.

Speaking of such things, I was out today and saw two things of note:

1. There are beautiful flower baskets in the planters all along the Danforth - thanks very much to the Danforth Mosaic BIA. This is something that a lot of people have asked for and there it is. It looks fabulous.

2. There are signs in a window on Coxwell, steps north of the Danforth, advertising a bamboo products shop that is set to open there. I tried to remember the name and the website, but did I mention I'm pregnant and can barely remember where I live? Anyway, it looks like it will be selling bamboo clothing and other items like bags.

And finally - the opening night of the farmers' market was last night and it was such a beautiful night. There are some new farmers there this year - a maple syrup maker and a farmer selling bison meat. There was lots and lots of nice produce already so make it your weekly stop. And check out the website so you don't miss a single moment of the action.

Ooops...

At the Oscars the stars who rattle off a list of thank-yous do it at their peril. They know they're bound to miss a few...as was the case with the Earl Beatty Fun Fair.

A word of thanks from Earl Beatty

This is a rather long list, but I'm sharing anyway because it's kind of amazing, especially in these difficult economic times, how many companies can still find it in their pocketbooks to help out a local school. Being part of DECA I've met a lot of people who volunteer a lot of hours, be it to DECA or to their local school or community centre. I find myself frequently in awe of what other folks around me are doing to improve our little part of the world. And so, I pass along these words of thanks...

The Earl Beatty Fun Fair Committee would like to thank our following generous sponsors. We couldn’t have done it without you!

New sensory and butterfly garden at Earl Haig

From the school....

On May 28th, 2009, children at Earl Haig Junior P.S. and Earl Haig Community Day
Care Centre will celebrate the opening and unveiling of their new garden and green
space—a hands-on sensory garden and butterfly garden play space for kindergarten and
preschool children at the school.

This playground transformation is part of a TDSB-wide initiative to “green” local
schools in the city. With the guidance and funding from Evergreen
(www.evergreen.ca), the dedication of parents, school, daycare staff, Toronto Master
Gardners group and the TDSB, this project is finally seeing the fruits of it's labour.
Dedication from the community will continue as maintenance of the garden will be
shared between the children in the kindergarten and day care and interested community
volunteers.

As a certified Gold Eco-School, Earl Haig has been working hard to make the school
environment as green as it can be—inside and now out. As principal Lisa Moser says,
“We are already very proud of our school-wide composting and recycling program and
the many other “green” initiatives we have adopted. The new kindergarten garden helps
us demonstrate our commitment to the environment in a fun and beautiful way.”
Kindergarten parent and garden coordinator Clem Brollo believes strongly that play
spaces should also engage children to learn and explore the natural environment. In
addition to a sensory garden where children will be able to explore a variety of plants
through smell, touch, and sight, the garden has also been designed to attract adult
butterflies. “Butterflies are beautiful and fascinating, so we planned the fence art to
highlight the life-cycle of the butterfly. The fence art also creates the added benefit of
masking the view of the adjacent parking lot and dumpster.”
Earl Haig Public School

The unveiling of the new garden including newly installed fence art will run from
approximately 3:00-4:00pm on May 28th, 2009 at the east end of the school yard. Earl
Haig is located at 15 Earl Haig Avenue, south of the Danforth and on the east side of
Coxwell Avenue. Local community members and media are invited to attend the event
and sample a little Earl Haig green energy.

G Spot Bistro

This note from one of our DECA members...

G Spot Bistro is applying for an indoor/outdoor liquour license.

Neighbours have concerns about another bar opening up - already we have experienced regular fights, yelling and partying from people parking on Cedarvale and other residential streets at 1 - 2 am on weekends.

Deadline to comment on their application is June 2, 2009.

If you share concerns, please send a note (template below) to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission.

Also, please contact Councillor Sandra Bussin (councillor_bussin@toronto.ca or 416-392-1376) to raise concern about lack of parking.

At least we should be pushing for a public meeting.

PS - Take a look at the notice on their window - they have already violated the process by not posting it in a fully visible spot (at least as of now)!
